a leap into the dark or a step into the light?

 Hebrews 11:1-3, 6; 2Co. 5:7
Thomas Hobbes was a philosopher, born in England in 1588. It was reported that on his deathbed, he said, "I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark."  I find it interesting that Hobbes, like many philosophers, seem to know a great deal about life, but when it comes to death, they are clueless. Whether this is due to arrogance brought about by self-impressed wisdom, or ignorance resulting from simply not knowing due to failure to consider carefully the other side of their concepts, I do not know.
In either case, whether arrogance or ignorance, the perspective of Faith must be considered. Skeptics see faith as that 'leap into the dark' of the Great Unknown, a term often used for the eternal state after death. Yet, this Great Unknown is only obscure to those who have rejected the Light of the Gospel. So, perhaps it is not so much the Great Unknown as it is the Great Unbelieved.
Evidence abounds, answers do exist for the great questions of life, but failure to consider the evidence results in ignorance (not knowing). This ignorance then stems from willful unbelief and a willful rejection of the evidence.
The Great Unknown is not unknown because there is a lack of evidence of the eternal state, but because one chooses not to believe, or to investigate said evidence.
Faith is not a leap into the dark, but rather, faith is a step into the Light. The Apostle John, writing  of the Word (John 1:1-3), indicates that "in Him (Jesus Christ) was life; and the life was the light of men, and the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." This is an act of the will. John continues in verse 9, writing "That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world."
So, it is not that the Light is unavailable, it is because He is rejected. This Light was prophesied by Isaiah when he wrote in Isa 9:2 "The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined." KJV and was fulfilled by Jesus in Matthew 4:13-17.
Faith in Jesus Christ is a choice which all have to step into the Light...and in His Light, there is no darkness.
Eliza Hewitt, after a long convalescence, was able to take brief walks in the sunshine. These short times in the outdoors greatly encouraged her and prompted her to pen the words to the hymn, Stepping In the Light. I think you might find your confidence in Christ encouraged as you sing this familiar tune.
