channels or reservoirs?

2Kings 7:3-11
Two leprous men reacted to the despairing conditions around them by hazarding their own lives. Reasoning that death was inevitable if they remained in the besieged city, they chose to go outside the walls and surrender themselves to the Syrian army, who might kill them, but, on the other hand, they might show mercy and feed them. At any rate, they must do something, for to sit there and do nothing was surely to starve. Off they went, to the camp of the enemy.
To their surprise, they found the camp deserted, the enemy had fled leaving all their supplies behind. As the two men enjoyed the bounty, one said to the other, “What we are doing by keeping this news to ourselves is not good…” They decided to return to the city and tell those who were dying that there was an abundance of food available.  This they did and the city was saved.
Those men could have kept that good news to themselves, but chose to share it with others and many were saved.  I wonder, how often we take advantage of God’s blessings by keeping them to ourselves?  We glean precious truths from His Word, from devotional readings, from sermons we hear and we are personally blessed, but how often do we share what we have received with those who are starving spiritually?
Have we become reservoirs when we should be channels?  Jesus told the Woman at the Well (John 4), that the Good News, once received, would become a flowing river of living water.  Has the Truth you have received become stagnant? Why not open the flood gates and let that Living Water flow freely?
Mary E. Maxwell wrote the words and the music was written by Ada Rose Gibbs to the hymn CHANNELS ONLY. Let the message of this song remind us to be channels rather than reservoirs.
