he knows my name!

Psalm 139:1-18
This psalm contains so much wonder at God's knowledge, it deserves much more time and space that we can give to it in this format. Like a wealthy mine strewn with rich ore, we will but pickup a few golden nuggets that lie near the opening.
Even a casual reading tells us that our God is omniscient, He knows everything! Psalm 147:4-5 reminds us that 'He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names..." There are other texts that attest to this same truth, but Psalm 139 is the most distinct and full statement to be found in Scripture and it is presented in language which is unsurpassed for beauty.
The leading idea is that of the comfort that is derived from knowing that God is everywhere; that He knows all that pertains to us; that we can never be hidden from His view; that He knows us from the beginning; that it is He Who has fashioned and formed us and that He knows all our needs and can supply them!
He knows all that there is in the heart (vs 1-6). He is everywhere present (vs 7-12). He created us and His eye has been upon us from the beginning of our existence (vs13-16) and His thoughts toward us are precious (vs 17-19).
He knows your name!  Examples abound, but to mention a few, we read in Isaiah 44:24-45:4 that Isaiah speaks of a man by the name of Cyrus who would conquer a certain city in a certain way at a certain time...and he did...over 100 years later!  Cyrus was not born when this prophecy was made, yet God knew his name!  When God called Jeremiah to be a prophet, He informed him that God's plans were formulated even before Jeremiah was born (Jere. 1:4-5). We read in Luke 1:1-3 that John the Baptist was named before he was born and called to be the forerunner of the Messiah.  Jesus knew the character of Nathaniel (John 1:47-49) before they ever met.
If what God knew and planned for these and many others, what makes us think that He does not know us as well, that He does not know our circumstances, even our names? He knows you...He knows your name!
A little girl came home from Sunday School and seemed to be bothered by something. When her mother asked what was the matter, she replied, "Oh, Mother, Teacher said in Sunday School that God sees everything we do, that He is always watching me and that makes me afraid I will do something wrong and God will see!" Her wise and loving mother smiled as she gathered her child into her arms and said,"My dear, it is true that God sees all, and that He sees you, but it is because He loves you so very much, that He can't take His eyes off you!"
Kelly and Annie McRae wrote the Southern Gospel song, HE KNOWS MY NAME. The chorus reads, "He knows my name, Every step that I take, Every move that I make, Every tear that I cry, And He knows my name..."

What a comfort!
