James 4:1
The Bible records much about war; it seems to be a part of human nature, for ever since the Fall in the Garden of Eden, conflict has been a detriment to peace. Our text reminds us that 'wars and fightings' originate from within and spread outwardly to include others. There are also spiritual wars which are waged against 'spiritual wickedness' (Ephesians 6:10-18). These also break out and include the physical realm. Wars and rumors of wars are prophesied to be rampant during the end times (Matt. 24:4ff), and so it is; but we are admonished 'See that you are not troubled'...i.e., see that you are not frightened, ' for these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.' We may find peace in troublesome times in knowing that God is in control and He is working all things according to His greater Plans and Purposes (Dan. 4:17). A familiar song to Southern Gospel lovers, Under Control, contains a chorus which reads... Under control (the winds obey His will) Under control (when he speaks, the storms be still) Oh don't be afraid (Oh, don't be afraid) Though the billows may roll God's almighty hand is still in command So rejoice in your soul for it's under control. When we take control, we cause wars and strife. Give Him control and see that you can have peace, even in the storms and wars.
