what happened?

Jeremiah 2:1-13 (BTW, be sure to read all Scripture in these blogs, not just my thoughts)
The context has to do with God's questioning the relationship between His people and Himself. He asks "What happened to our relationship...is it Me?" He then states what He had done, and then what they had done. Note the contrast, also note the 'generation gap' in verse 5. The seed of separation that began in an earlier generation has increased and now reaches fruition. Verse 8 indicates that they have grown ignorant of God's Word and commit things that led to their present state of idolatry.

Yet, God will still plead with each succeeding generation (vs 9). Note also verse 12:
Be Astonished...Be Afraid...Be Desolate. Verse 13, "For" i.e., "because MY people have (1) Forsaken Me, the Living Water; (2) Hewn out for themselves, Broken Cisterns.

So it is when we choose the stagnant life for fresh life...and as when we "leave our first love" (Rev. 2:4).

What causes a person to leave his first love? It happens when he allows someone or some thing else to begin to steal away the affections. This is where both physical and spiritual adultery begin. An attraction that leads away from our first love. It will first begin with our attention, then leads to a change in our affection and if not checked, will cause a change in attitude and finally action.

We would such would 'never happen to me', and yet, it does! Some of the finest Christians I have ever known have forsaken that fountain of living water and are drinking from polluted cisterns. Their affections for the love of their lives have grown cold, misdirected towards something that cannot satisfy nor replace that true love.

The Cure is in Rev. 2:5. Remember, Repent and Return to your first love.  Spend some time in sincere reflection, ask the Lord to show you where you have left your first love and what has replaced Him...ask the source of your drinking water.

Robert Robinson and Margaret Clarkson co-labored on an old hymn that might help you remember where to get your water if you will review it today by singing Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing.

Thanks for the reminder Pastor Bob. As I get a drink several times during the day I need to think about where I get a spiritual drink from moment to moment.
