The danger of a person believing he or she can earn more favor with God is that it removes the focus from Christ's completed work on the cross and puts it on the effort of the individual person.

When a believer stumbles and blows it, people of grace should help by bearing each other's burdens and get him or her back on the right path. All believers, because of the grace given to them, are to live in freedom, by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and not according to the flesh. Because Jesus has truly set believers free from the law, they should stay free in grace and not go back to living the old way again. People don’t earn favor with God through religion and performance-based effort. Instead, God’s favor is received as a gift of his miraculous grace. God sent Jesus to die for the sins of the world so that He could purchase their freedom from slavery to the law and adopt them as His own children. The purpose of God’s Law was to be humankind’s guardian until Christ came, and it was given to point people to God’s promise in Jesus Christ. The law couldn’t save a person in the Old Testament, and it still can’t save a person now. Salvation only comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Christ loved us and died on the cross for us, because the law was never intended to make us right with God. When people truly understand the implications of the gospel of grace, they know they have the freedom to always turn to Christ without guilt or shame of their sin because he loves them, accepts them, and sees them through the filter of grace. |
