After someone believes in Jesus as the Messiah, they must then follow Jesus’ call to discipleship with total, sacrificial, and immediate obedience. After Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist and tested by Satan in the desert, His public ministry immediately began with Him inviting everyone to turn around and trust the Good News. Mark tells us that John the Baptist came to prepare the way for Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, who was, and is, greater than John in every way. Isaiah describes this “great, humble, servant king” who would come and suffer for the sins of the world so that those who believe in Him will have salvation. That King is Jesus, and He is our Gospel Hero! The instructions that God gave to the Israelites in Egypt about the lamb for the Passover sacrifice point to the ultimate sacrifice that the Lamb of God would one day be for all of humanity. Naaman struggled to understand and accept that the healing he needed, and ultimately the gospel message of grace and forgiveness, was as simple and free as Elisha suggested. When Jonah was in the belly of the fish, he had an overwhelming gospel encounter with God that resulted in his repentance and transformation. When God entered into the covenantal promise with Abram, He made sure make it known that He alone would be responsible for the promise's fulfillment. Shortly after God declared everything in His creation as “very good”, sin entered the world and messed it all up. And as a result, God declares the consequences for disobeying Him, but He also indicates His redemptive plan to fix the problem humans’ disobedience created. |
